Many time Manitoba Champion FM (FiDE Master) Kevin Gentes passed away on May 1, 2021.
Our records show that Kevin was Manitoba Junior Champion in 1984, 1985, and 1987, and overall Manitoba Champion in 1989, 1990, 1992, 1993, 1998, 1999, 2007, and 2015.

He also won countless (although we will attempt to chronicle) other local tournament throughout the years.
On this page we will attempt to chronicle his chess career; it was very active so this will be an ongoing project. We will start with some photos – Kevin appeared on the cover of the local Manitoba Chess Association publication ‘Exclam !’ several times – in addition he was on Canada’s national chess magazine ‘Chess Canada Echecs’, at least once.
Kevin’s first CFC rating appears in Chess Canada Echecs # 57, November-December 1982. It is a provisional rating of 1324 after 5 games. I (Tony Boron)was the registrar for the Winnipeg Chess Centre Junior Tournament, and recall accepting Kevin’s CFC membership fee and entry. Richard Lingo was the TD, and his report in the same issue indicates the tournament was held September 18-19. It may have been future master David Langner’s first or second tournament – David and Kevin would become very good friends.
Quite astounding that less four years later, Kevin would defeat then world number 3, GM Artur Yusupov at the 1986 Canadian Open.
