Member Benefits
A current Calgary Chess Club (CCC) membership is required to particpate in any club event or activity, except Beginner classes. CCC membership is not required to play in any Alberta Chess Association (ACA) events, even if CCC hosts them on our premises or elsewhere.
Tournament play on Tuesdays and Casual play on Wednesday and Friday evenings require membership. Visitors can enjoy one free casual session, but we will ask that you complete and sign a waiver to cover our insurance requirements.
Rental of our equipment always requires membership. Equipment could include quality plastic pieces and vinyl boards, and clocks. We even have a very large outdoor set that can be rented for fun private gatherings.
Membership dues provide our club with an important source of revenue for funding items such as supplies, library, and hosting and subsidizing certain events and tournaments. In contrast, net tournament entry fees (after tournament director, rating and other expenses), are returned to players as prize money.
Other sources of revenue consist of occasional donations and facility rentals, and funding through AGLC. The latter is highly regulated and restricted mainly to rent and new chess equipment, leaving membership dues as the main sources of revenue we can use at our sole discretion.
Members have free access to books, magazines and digital resources from our large library. Some materials can be signed out.
Members have the right to vote at our AGM in late October. We also encourage members to help us by volunteering.
CCC has a fixed membership year ending on August 31st. Our full-year Adult / Junior membership fees are $40 / $30. After March 1st, when less than 6 months remain, membership fees are reduced by 50%, to $20 / $15. After July 1st, when less than 2 months remain, CCC also offers membership through to August 31st of the following year (i.e., up to 14 months for the price of 12).
