Five participants in the 9-player event were rated above 2000 Elo, which made the resulting triple round robin a competitive affair. Split into a morning and an afternoon session, the players contested 23 rounds in total! Predictably, the top rated players occupied the top places at the end of the day.

The tournament will be remembered for several interesting developments. Among them Aditya Raninga, seeded fourth behind FM Dale Haessel, Anand Rishi Chandra and Georgi Kostadinov, who led most of the way until getting caught by fifth ranked Rex Yumen in the last round. Rex remarkably went 7/7 in the afternoon session to overtake the leader. Top seed Dale Haessel had a poor outing, finishing in fifth with an overall score of just 50%. Most definitely he will be better again in the near future.

But by far the most exciting and memorable detail of the event was provided by the playoff between Rex Yumen and Aditya Raninga to determine the winner. Both had posted 18/23 to reach the final. The players traded blows in the first two games of the playoff, each winning with the Black pieces, but then Aditya won two in a row to take the 2020 Alberta Blitz Championship. Congratulations!
